Should You Hire an Additional Assistant?

Although there are many areas in our practices that we don’t have control over: patient expectations, reimbursement rates and regulatory policies, for example, we can control the number of staff we hire and the efficiency of our offices. If you have two assistants in your practice, one can shadow the physician and the other can be a floater. This can impact your patients and your remaining office staff in a very positive way. The assistant that is dedicated to the doctor can learn how the physician communicates conditions and treatments to patients and mirror protocols. That means patients’ questions regarding routine matters such as changing dressings, shoe choice, etc. can be answered by the assistant. The patient receives additional face-to-face time with a professional in the office but you, the physician are freed up to see more patients. In addition, another assistant can help take the stress off the rest of the staff and if someone calls out sick it won’t throw your office into disarray.
