Did you know that human resource experts estimate that it costs about one and a half times the amount of a staff member’s salary to recruit, replace and train a new person for the same position? That means when you hire a new member of your staff, making sure they get off to a good start is not only part of a positive office atmosphere, it’s a sound financial investment as well.
Here are some tips on making sure a new employee feels welcome and gets a solid start in their new position:
- Have the lead physician in the office call the new employee once they’ve been hired before they actually start the job. On the call, welcome the person and let them know how happy you are that they will be working in the practice and emphasize your confidence in the specific skills they will be bringing to the office.
- On the new hire’s first day be sure to designate an experienced member of your staff to show the new employee around and be available for questions as they settle in. Ideally, this person should be someone that can mentor the new hire to provide an ongoing support and ensure success.
- Hold a luncheon for the new employee sometime during the first week.
- Leave a bouquet of flowers and a handful of Baby Ruth bars and a note signed by all the office staff saying that having them in the office is a home run.
- The office manager or lead physician should schedule a meeting with the new hire at the end of the first week of work to check in and see what their experience has been so far. It also provides a low-pressure opportunity for the employee to ask any questions.
