4 Ways to Increase Productivity in Your Practice

No matter how long you’ve been in practice, increasing the productivity of your staff is a goal all practitioners share. At The Institute of Podiatric Excellence and Development (IPED), we have a unique advantage of having a broad membership that spans all stages of a podiatrist’s career to draw on when looking for the best practice management strategies. Below are some proven tips for improving staff productivity:

  1. Seek staff input. When employees feel that their opinions matter and that they have a say in creating the most efficient office possible, productivity goes up. Trust those “in the trenches” who are doing the job to be able to articulate ways to improve the protocols and procedures in your practice. They’ll be invested in the outcome if they are able to give input.
  2. Invest in training.  By making continuing education a priority for everyone who plays a role in your practice you are telling your employees that they play an important role in your practice. It also shows that you want them to find their job fulfilling and encourages them to strive for personal and professional growth and see value in the work that they do.
  3. Choose the “pat on the back” over the “kick in the pants.” It’s the old adage: you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Ask any employee which type of employer inspires him or her to give their all, the one who is constantly criticizing or the one who compliments a job well done. Positive reinforcement wins over negative every time. Giving a deserving staff member kudos in front of other employees or patients creates a chain reaction of good feelings that positively impacts productivity in the entire office.

Open the doors to communication.  Give your staff clear methods and opportunities to talk to you and office managers. This reduces frustration and a sense of helplessness when things are not going smoothly and is also a way for you to understand what is working well.

In the end, respecting your employees and giving them reasons to value the job they do as part of your team is a win-win for you and them--and your patients.
