Have you ever seen someone with the title of Inspectress? Certain high end hotels employ them. Their job is to regularly walk through all parts of the hotel and look for the little things that will give guests the impression that the hotel is dirty or messy. The premise is that a business that doesn’t take good care of the little things probably isn’t taking good care of the big things.

At the Institute for Podiatric Excellence and Development we offer the opportunity to learn from the experience of many podiatric physicians. Those in private practice attest to the importance of the impression your office gives to your patients. Consider assigning someone on your staff the role of “inspectress,” with the task of doing a weekly check of the “little things.” Below is a checklist to help get you started:

Waiting Room:

  • Carpet vacuumed
  • Display shelf dusted
  • Furniture dusted and polished
  • Picture frames and glass dusted & cleaned
  • Magazines neatly displayed / Magazine issue dates checked
  • Garbage pails emptied
  • Windows and door free of smudges and fingerprints
  • Plant leaves dusted and watered if real
  • Tiled entryway clean and dirt free
  • Brochure display cleaned and organized

Hallway/Back Office:

  • Floors swept and mopped, and free of dust bunnies
  • Picture frames level and dusted
  • Sink cleaned
  • Cabinets dusted and polished
  • Counter tops cleaned and free of papers
  • Treatment room doors cleaned and polished
  • Vacuum carpet and baseboards
  • Clean and vacuum under shelves
  • Dust and clean off windowsill
  • Water and deadhead plants
  • Boxed office supplies kept covered and dust free
  • Dust off DME boxes
  • Keep all brace bins neat, not overflowing

Treatment Rooms:

  • Dust busters cleaned on weekly basis (or more if warranted)
  • Chair bases cleaned
  • Counter tops cleaned
  • DME cabinet stocked neatly
  • Paper towels kept stocked
  • Floors vacuumed after each patient
  • Floors swept nightly and mopped weekly or more if warranted
  • Chairs wiped down nightly
  • Wipe out foot tray
  • Appointment card caddy filled
  • Picture frames dusted and glass cleaned
  • Phone cords untangled
  • OTC dispensing products stocked neatly
  • Check expiration dates on all stock
  • Benz-all changed every week
  • Instruments autoclaved weekly or as warranted
  • Dremel battery packs charged weekly (Saturday)


  • Clean out fridge every Friday
  • Sink clean and empty
  • Cabinets neat and orderly
  • Garbage pails and covers cleaned off daily
  • Microwave kept cleaned
  • Floor swept
  • Doormat vacuumed or shaken out when needed
  • Top of fridge cleaned off


  • Paper products filled
  • Soap dispenser filled
