Foot Health Awareness Month: Make the Most of Your Practice

April is Foot Health Awareness Month. How will your practice take advantage of this opportunity to educate patients? At the Institute of Podiatric Excellence and Development (IPED) our goal is to help podiatric professionals have more successful practices and part of this is improving patient outcomes. Patients who are educated about foot health issues make better health care choices. Use this time to raise awareness. How you do that will depend on your particular goals and patient population. Below are a few suggestions.

Host a Shoe Check

Podiatrists know that the shoe patients wear can have a huge impact on the condition of their feet and ankles. Many people wear shoes that are too small for their feet or continue to wear shoes that feel comfortable but are past their prime. Choosing the right shoes for sports or fitness activity you are doing is also an important factor in preventing injury. Informing patients about the elements of good shoe design and getting a proper fit can help them reduce foot pain.

Diabetic Checkups

Diabetes can have an extremely detrimental effect on a patient’s lower extremities. The podiatrist should be an active member of the care team for a person with this disease. Help promote the necessity for regularly scheduled podiatric checkups for patients with diabetes. Disseminate information with your office’s contact information that offers basic care tips for patients with this disease.

Be a Community Activist

Foot Health Awareness Month is the perfect reason to offer to speak at local senior centers, schools or other appropriate venues about foot issues that are relevant to your community and your patient population. Letting people know the many ways a podiatrist can help improve health and daily life will hopefully increase self-care in patients and also let them know where to turn when they have a podiatric problem.
