3 Good Reasons for Job Descriptions
At the Institute of Podiatric Excellence and Development (IPED), we know that hiring new employees is a job many practitioners dread. In our efforts to get through the process as quickly as possible, we try to streamline the process and may try to gauge how successful a new team member will be based on the interview and our intuitive response to a candidate. As Malcolm Gladwell has demonstrated in his new book, “Talking to Strangers,” what we see can easily deceive us and give an incorrect impression.
Taking the time to write up job descriptions for each position in your office, while initially an effort, can save you time and money down the road. Below are three ways job descriptions protect you and help ensure a good fit for the position.
1. An accurate job description provides a clear picture of the actual work done by the person in the position. This gives the applicant a precise understanding of what they’ll be held accountable for. It eliminates any confusion about specific job duties and thereby provides an objective and measurable tool when conducting performance evaluations.
2. Job descriptions should include the essential functions of the position and the skills and abilities necessary to fulfill them. This documentation protects you the employer in the event that an employee misrepresents their qualifications. In the unfortunate situation where it becomes necessary to fire an employee, a well-written job description can decrease your risk of an unlawful termination claim.
3. A job description should put the nuts and bolts of a position down on paper. How many hours a week is the employee expected to work, who do they report to, is the position non-exempt or exempt, is there overtime pay, etc. This greatly reduces the chances of your employee terminating because of unclear expectations.
